Nassau County Legislator Diane Yatauro of Glen Cove announced a “Drug Disposal Program” on Saturday, Sept. 12 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Glen Cove Police Department and local Nassau County Police Precincts.

Legislator Yatauro said, “I urge all residents to go through their medicine cabinets to see if there are any unwanted, expired, unused or illicit drugs and bring them all to any of our drop-off locations.

Many of our children begin a nightmare journey to heroin addiction by first sharing pharmaceuticals stolen from medicine cabinets. Being a concerned mother myself, I implore all parents to follow these vital steps to protect their family.”

City of Glen Cove Police Chief William Whitton added, “We all know that drug abuse among teenagers can begin at home. This program will help encourage parents to scrutinize their homes to remove unnecessary medicines. We in the Glen Cove Police Department are very pleased to participate in this life-saving program.”

In addition to safeguarding our community's children, the Drug Disposal Program provides a benefit to the environment. In the past, flushing expired and leftover prescription and over-the-counter medications down the toilet or washing them down the sink was considered the norm. Studies have indicated that this method of disposal poses potential harm to the environment.

The Drug Disposal Program is free; residents remain strictly anonymous. Accepted medications include pain-killers, tranquilizers, anti-depressants, antibiotics, over-the-counter medications, pet medications, vitamins, supplements, and inhalers. Drugs should be in their original containers if possible, and if not, they can be placed in Ziploc bags with a label. The police will NOT accept needles, syringes, IV bags, infectious waste, pharmaceutical waste not generated by households, radioactive pharmaceuticals and vaccines.
